Educe from Latin educer. Educe means to draw out, bring out, elicit information or solutions. An example might be found in a math class. For example, the teacher will try to draw out information that the student already has......perhaps a formula for finding the square root of a number. Another example might be found in a history class. For example, the teacher might elicit information that a student knows about the Great Wall of China....perhaps what a student knows already about the building of The Great Wall....or the length of The Great Wall. As the teacher educes what the student already knows about The Great Wall, the teacher can add new information about the subject under discussion.

Doctor Bob
As an e-duc-ator, your specific question entices me to respond beyond a literal answer.
The word "education" derives from the Latin prefix "ex (out of) and the Latin root "ducere" (to draw), i.e., the job of teachers in the classroom has more to do with DRAWING OUT of a student than with POURING INTO a student- though a visit to many a classroom may not always indicate such.
And so, students readily tend to ACCEPT hands-on opporunities to draw from their own inner experiences toward connecting with something new- just as they readily tend to BLOCK lectures which ignore the drawing out (educing) process.
In summary, the sentence I offer you is this: the original purpose of "education"- at least as viewed by the classicists- is to "educe" (draw out) from students their previous knowledge and experience toward the goal of connecting such with a new and broader understanding.

educe means to bring out something from something, like: to educe order out of chaos, to educe relief out of pain. Chaos being the lack of order, its opposite really, and pain the absence of relief. So, we're talking opposites here and you can extract one from the other, because in pain there is a (hidden) relief and in chaos there is a (hidden, potential) order.
