How far did super bee fly?

Train A travelling at 50mph and train B travelling at 40mph are approaching each other on the same track due to a switching error. When the trains are 540 miles apart, super bee, resting on the cowcatcher of train A decides to fly up the track towards train B at an average velocity of 350mph. When super bee sees his reflection in the cowcatcher of train B, he does a quick about face and flies back down the track towards trainA at the same average speed. This scenario is repeated ad nauseum until the trains crash, and the last thing going through super bees mind is his rear end.

Good answer. The problem is not difficult once you realize it is a Distance =rate x Time problem. In fact, flying up and down the track is irrelevant. It might be interesting to calculate the path if superbee flies off in a parabolic path and returns in time to get mashed, or maybe a right triangle path (how far did he get from the track etc.

Their combined velocities make train A and B move 90 miles closer to each other each hour so in 6 hours they will crash if they're 540 miles apart. So Super Bee has 6 hours to fly back and forth between the trains (and sadly only that many hours to live). If he is in constant motion for those 6 hours at an average rate of 350mph he will fly a distance of 2100 miles.
