Solve for s?

Ned paid $32, before tax, for a shirt that cost $18 and a pair of shorts that were on sale for 20% off the original price. The equation 18+(s-0.20s)=32 represents the situation, where s is the original price of the shorts. What was the original price of the short?

If you could get to the equation, I wonder why you couldn't solve it.

Samzappala, as usual, is confusing the situation. The first answer given
was correct and well written but I want you to understand why the answer
is what it is if you are having problems with the algebra.

18 + (s -.2s) = 32

Using order of operations, solve inside the parentheses first (remember that s has a coefficient of 1) :
1s -.2s = .8s

You now have:
18 + .8s = 32

Subtract 18 from both sides:
.8s = 14

divide both sides by .8
s = 17.5

The original price of the shorts was $17.50

atta
18 + s - 0.2s = 32 => 18 + s - s/5 = 32 => 18 + 0.8s = 32 => 0.8s = 16/9 || 4s/5 = 16/9 => s = 20/9.

18+(s-0.2s)=32

subtract 18 from both sides
(s-0.2s) = 14

factor out the s
s(1-0.2)=14

subtract 0.2 from 1
s(0.8)=14

divide 0.8 into both sides
to get the answer
s=14/0.8 = 17.5

samzappala
32-18=14; which is the shorts' cost at 80% (100-20=80). So 14 is 80% of ? Break the 80% into a decimal, which is .80. Divide: 14/.8=17.5; which is the original price. 18+(17.5-20%)=32.

18 + s - .2s = 32
s - .2s = 14
.8s = 14
s = $17.50 was the price of the shorts.
