I had to look this one up and I would never have gotten this one. The problem with these kinds of riddles is that there are too many possible ways you could look at letters and it's impossible to think of all of them. I like your math problems better.
I think it's easy once you know the answer. I don't think it's in any way easy if you're looking for a needle in a haystack which is what this feels like.
In case someone else wants to try their hand at this, I'll only give an answer, not the method. Maybe if I add enough terms someone out there will see the pattern.
The series is:
O, T, T, F, F, S, S, E, N, T, E, T, T, F, F, S, S, E, N, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, T, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, F, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, S, E, E, E, E, E, E, E, E, E, E, N, N, N, N, N, N, N, N, N, N, (THE NEXT HUNDRED TERMS ARE O, THE NEXT HUNDRED TERMS AFTER THAT ARE T, THE NEXT HUNDRED TERMS AFTER THAT ARE ALSO T, THE NEXT HUNDRED TERMS AFTER THAT ARE F, THEN ANOTHER HUNDRED TERMS OF F, THE NEXT HUNDRED TERMS ARE S, THE NEXT HUNDRED TERMS AFTER THAT ARE ALSO S, THE NEXT HUNDRED TERMS AFTER THAT ARE E, THE NEXT HUNDRED TERMS AFTER THAT ARE N, THE NEXT THOUSAND TERMS AFTER THAT ARE O, THE NEXT THOUSAND TERMS AFTER THAT ARE T, THEN ANOTHER THOUSAND TERMS OF T, THEN A THOUSAND TERMS OF F AND ANOTHER THOUSAND TERMS OF F, THEN A THOUSAND TERMS OF S AND THEN ANOTHER THOUSAND TERMS OF S, FOLLOWED BY A THOUSAND TERMS OF E THEN A THOUSAND TERMS OF N, THEN 10,000 TERMS OF O FOLLOWED BY 20,000 TERMS OF T, 20,000 TERMS OF F, 20,000 TERMS OF S, 10,000 TERMS OF E, 10,000 TERMS OF N, THEN 100,000 TERMS OF O, 200,000 TERMS OF T, 200,000 TERMS OF F, 200,000 TERMS OF S, 100,000 TERMS OF E, THEN A 100,00 TERMS OF N)
The only terms in this series are O, T, F, S, E, N
The first TEN terms are O, T, T, F, F, S, S, E, N
I'll leave it to someone else to figure out why. I will say that this has nothing to do with the shapes of the letters, where the letters fall in the alphabet, the distance between the letters, or any numerical equivalent the letters might have (i.e. E being the 5th letter in the alphabet is irrelevant). This has to do with numbers but not in a mathematical sense.
