can I state in an essay that an issue is taken as axiomatic and then reinforce this by following the statement by citing a quote or is it a contradiction. ?

It's the opening line of an essay due in tommorow and I want to include the quote but I'm not sure if I'm contradicting myself.

Perhaps you can have your cake and eat it too. How about a statement that x considers this issue as axiomatic but for those of us who do not consider it as axiomatic, I offer the following supportive quote. (Isn't that frequently true? One person will say: CLEARLY but others in the room are thinking: CLEAR TO WHOM?

Another thought just occurred to me. If it is axiomatic, that should mean that it is obvious to most people and should need no supporting statements. Perhaps it is not axiomatic after all.

Since you are in a hurry, I will offer a quick answer and invite others to elaborate.

"Among the ancient Greek philosophers an axiom was a claim which could be seen to be true without any need for proof."

If the quote you are citing is a proof of the issue that you are referring to as axiomatic, I would say it could be an indication that the statement is not an axiom but rather an hypothesis or theorem, and therefore there is a contradiction as you indicate.

If the quote is offered as an opinion or example that merely supports the fact that your statement is true, but doesn't actually prove it, then I would not consider it contradictory.

If you were to provide the actual information, it would be easier to give a more specific answer. I presume that you prefer not to do that.
