debate state your opinions?

of the five goals of contemporary criminal sentencing retribution, incapacitation, deterrence, rehabilitation, and victim restoration. what is eveyones opinions or thought about which of these goals should be the primary goal of sentencing. how might the type of crime change our minds on what the primary goal should be?

I believe Rehabilitation should be the primary goal of sentenceing i have this belife because some of the criminals in todays prisons are the most maladjusted people in society. Most of the inmates have had too little discipline or too much, most come from broken homes, and have no self-esteem. They are very insecure and are at war with themselves as well as with society. Most inmates do not learn moral values or learn how to follow everyday norms. Also, when most lawbreakers are labeled criminals they enter the phase of secondary deviance. They will admit they are criminals or believe it when they enter the phase of secondary deviance Next, some believe that if we want to rehabili

As you have mentioned in your information about what you think as to the mental and emotional instability of people who are maladjusted, undisciplined, from broken homes, have no self esteem, etc., it is my opinion that all of these problems that they have can only be changed when the person wants to change. I firmly believe that these societal misfits need intense counseling from mental health professionals. The actions of some of these persons seem normal to them. They need to be shown that what they do is NOT normal. They also must understand that there are consequences for their actions. In the ancient nation of Israel the law was "an eye for an eye". The law prohibited, stealing, lying, rape, murder, adultery, fornication, etc. Those who committed such crimes were held responsible for their actions, and whatever crime they committed carried judicial actions. As long as those Israelites obeyed the laws, the nation prospered. There are unnumbered members of society who have experienced these same problems in life as those who practice crimes, and yet they are able to rise above those life patterns and live a fully normal life....normal as any life can be in this present system of things.

First of all, let me congratulate you for attempting to answer the question yourself before seeking a tutor's opinion. Some folks come to this site with no effort in order to get spoon-fed, having others do their work for them and then turning in a tutor's work as their own. And, there are tutors who oblige them by spoon-feeding them. That's not tutoring. Rather, that is nursing.
It sounds like you have given some thought to the question and I respect that.
Several years ago I would have agreed with you re REHABILITATION as the primary goal in sentencing. I have now switched gears. I find the courts too lenient, especially with drunken drivers returning for 4th and 5th offenses. I think it is about time that the good of the OVERALL SOCIETY get primary consideration rather than the individual offender.
And so, RESTITUTION and DETERRENCE are now my primary goals. Keep these repeat offenders off the street with longer sentences. Remove lenient judges who flaunt the intent of the legislature. I would go so far as to favor laws which set a minimum number of years in prison. I also like the idea for inmates paying for their own food and housing. If inmates want privileges, they should work for them. Finally, victims should get more consideration, i.e., RESTORATION to Victims should get high priority.
As you can see, I have gone from dove to hawk on this issue.
Keep thinking about this issue. There are few black and white answers. The "answer" is some combination of the above but done by judges who have the common sense that God gave them.
