if x/y = 3/4 and x/z = 1/8, then y/z =?

if x/y = 3/4 and x/z = 1/8, then y/z =?

I solved for y and got (4/3)x
I solved for z and got 8x or 8(4/3) = 32/3
When I solve for y/z, which is (4/3) / (32/3) , I get 1/8
But the answer is supposed to be 1/6
I have done this so often that I now have a mental block.

x/y =3/4 => y/x =4/3
x/z = 1/8
Now
(y/x)/(z/x) = y/x*x/z = y/z = 4/3*1/8 = 4/24 = 1/6

The above expression of y / z = ? can be found by mere substitution. You have the correct expressions for y && z, which are (y = 4x/3 && z = 8x). By substituting these expressions into the ratio y / z yields the following: y/z = (4x/3) / (8x) = 0.75x / 8x = (4x/3)(1/8x) = 4x/24x, which simplifies to y/z = 1/6.

Solve for y and z in terms of x:

x/y = 3/4 => cross multiply to get 3y = 4x => y = (4x)/3

x/z = 1/8 => cross multiply to get => z = 8x

NOW solve for y/z using substitution:

y/z = [(4x)/3]/8x => the x's cancel leaving you with y/z = 4/(3*8) = 4/24 = 1/6

Dr Bob, your solution is wrong on the second line,
whre you show z=8x or 8(4/3) = (32/3), no,no,no! x is not (4/3), it is:
(3/4)y!
hope you see your error now.

a) if x/y = 3/4, then y/x=4/3,So:
b) (y/x).(x/z) = (4/3).(1/8) =
(1/3).(1/2) = (1/6)<===Answer.
Hope your mental block is removed!

matherapist
divide the first equation by the second and get (x/y)/ (x/z) = (3/4) / (1/8)
The x'x cancel [(x/y)* (z/x) giving z/y=3/4*8/1=6 therefore y/z=1/6

This is the answer from Nagin Patel AKA Neil Surati:

The given equations are 1. x/y = 3/4 and 2. x/z = 1/8, and from these no. 3. y/z = 1/6 ?

By substitute method, first we take 1. x/y = 3/4 i.e. 4x = 3y ( A ) , and from 2. x/z = 8 , i.e. 8x = z

now, 8x = z , i.e. 2 ( 4x ) = z, i.e. again, 4x = z / 2 .......( B ),
substitute 4x = z / 2 in ( A ) so, we get new equation
we have 4x = 3y it becomes, z /2 = 3y -------( C ) deivde ( C ) by3z both side
so, we get the answer. i.e. (z / 2 ) (1/3z) = 3y/3z
so, we get y / z = 1/6
