Hi, MWilson........When you want to know what half of a number is you divide it by 2, because 1/2=1 part out of 2 parts. 1 part out of 14 is missing, and when you divide 14 by 2, how many are left? Similarly, lets say that you had 12 cats and 2/3 ( 2 parts out of 3) are missing. You have one part out of 12 left. You will divide 12 by three. Two parts out of three are missing. You still have 1 part How many cats are left? Another example: If you want to make two braids with your hair you would divide your hair into two parts. All of your hair=1 part. You will make 2 parts out of one, or divide your hair into two parts to make two braids.
Practice questions:
1/2 of 10=?
1/2 of 20=?
1/2 of 18=?
1/2 of 16=?
1/4 of 16=?
1/2 of 12=?
1/3 of 15=?

I hope that you have enough cat food left to feed the half that are left!!

Much better title than your previous posts :)

You have half of the cats and half of them are gone. What is half of 14? You can either divide 14 by 2 or multiply 14 by 1/2.

I'm not going to give you the answer to that because I think you can do the calculations on your own.

Here's another question that might make it easier:
If you have two apples and you give half of them to your friend, how many apples do you have left? How many apples does your friend have?
The answer is you have one apple and your friend has one apple because 2/2 or 2*(1/2) = 1
