1. 6 of 40 are lefties; or 6/40=3/20=15%. So 9 is 15% of? 3 is 5%, so 100% is 60. You see, what is done to 1 side has to be done to the other. (9/3,15/3). 5% * 20= 100%. 3*20+60.

2. 2gal=450sq/ft. For 1200sq/ft, divide: 1200/450=120/45=24/9=8/3; so 2.66 2gal (see the given imfo)buckets are needed. As for the purchase, 2.66*2=5.32 gallons; so 6 gallons are to be purchased.

3. 14 trees=17lbs. 375lbs=? So 375/17=22.06 4. 5.5/1.5=3.66
*14 *2 inches
-------- ------
308.8 or 309 trees 7.33

5. Without the size of the lake, or the area being "fished", there's not enough imfo.

6. Distance /.25=50 miles= distance*4.

I will answer your problem # 5, If you fully understand it, then you can solve the other problems as well:

We know that in the lake there are 112 tagged trouts. Ask your self this question:

If in a catch of 82 trouts you find 32 tagged fishes, Then in a catch of how many trouts there will be 112 tagged fishes? Let your answer be a total of X trouts in the lake. So, if you write the equation of your question using ratios, and solving for x, you should find x = 287 total trouts tagged and untagged in the lake. That is all.
Please read the problem statement several times and make sure you fully understand it before trying to get an answer.
I also recommend you to buy a small book written by G.Polya "HOW TO SOLVE IT", for a few dollars from Amazon book store. You will learn a lot from this little book. Good luck and God bless you. Professor rajbaba78.

There is a proceedure for solving problems

Step 1- read the problem carefully
Step 2 - re-read it carefully and decide what the problem is asking
Step 3 - determine what information they give you
Step 4 Decide how you have to use the information
step 5 Do it

For the first problem - step 1 read it and get a feel for things
Step 2 They ask how many students in a class with 9 lefties
Step 3 the say that "on average, in a class of 40 students, 6 are left handed
step 4- If I take the ratio of 9 lefties to 6 lefties and multiply by 40 I should get the answer
Step 5 (9/6) x 40 =60.

Hint these all look like you need to find the ratio of 2 items and multiply by a 3rd number. The item with the same units will be used in the ratio.

Good luck

I just spent an hour answering these questions but my answer got cut off by the site's time limit. I don't have the time to do it over again so I'm going to recommend seriously that you either talk to your teacher about these problems or find a local tutor to help you. All of the problems you've listed today are essentially dealing with the same concepts and ALL of the problems you've listed in this question are solved the same way. This leads me to believe that you are really not understanding the concept of ratios and you need HELP. More help than anyone on this site can give you. You need someone to sit down with you and teach you these concepts. They are absolutely essential for moving on to higher levels of mathematics.
