tutorsTeach 		My reason says, it was discovered. The numerals and all the mathematical and geometrical signs and punctuation were invented, but if you think about, adding, subtracting and doing all kinds of mathematical and algebraic operations were already up there. There was just no one to think it out, to bring it up. The one or ones who finally put it in prospective for us and revealed a lot of stuff that was supposedly "hidden" from us thousands and hundreds of years ago - they are the mathematicians who only invented the written signage but in truth they discovered all the math that we know today. I call "invention" something that is more material, more physical, like the wheel was invented. Galileo Galilei didn't invent the earth gravity either. It was already there, in full operation. Galileo only told us that it was in existence. So, you got discoveries vs. inventions.

JRami 		initially Math was discovered since Scientists were trying to explain physical phenomenons, and then later on some of it was invented. Statistics is an area of Math where some discoveries are used as empirical rules while the sequence of Algebra and Calculus was invented. Also number systems were invented.
