jdrew39 		My thought is that you would like to know how different cultures relate to society as a whole. Social customs and choices differ from different cultural backgrounds. We live in a multicultural world, and because of this we can learn much from cultures different from our own. One important factor to consider is the learning of a language within our own community, but unlike our own culture and language. For example, I live in a community where there are many who speak Cambodian, many who speak Spanish and at least two families who speak an Indian dialect. Spanish is quite easy to learn, because of the similarities to the English language, but the other two are so different from English that it takes a great effort to learn them. I am slowly but progressively trying to learn the Cambodian language, and as in any learning situation, different people appreciate your effort to learn their language. This desire to converse with cultures other than your own can break down any prejudices that exist, drawing different cultures together. The whole of society would benefit greatly if we all were interested enough to learn to converse with others.

MFB13 		There is alot to be said about our culture and society if we still do have a culture anymore...but I will returen to give my definitive views in a while...

MichaelT 		During the decades of the 60s and 70s police forces in cities throughout the United States were used to squash civil unrest. This caused dissension between students, minorities, on one side, and police and the establishment on the other. I lived during this era and experienced cops coming onto my college campus throwing tear gas canisters at me and knocking heads with their billy clubs. We hated the police and called them "pigs." Since student populations were a source of recruits for the police, recruitment was down. There was a trust factor missing. "They" were the enemy. From the experience, the police learned new techniques to quell unrest without alienating the population, but it took a good twenty years before their respect was restored in the community.
