The reason why I use Excel all the time using formulas and functions is the fact that it saves lots of time especially when filling in laboratory results and automatically calculating all the necessary statistics required to define its precision and accuracy. It's a great short cut for constructing spread sheets whether for reporting scientific data, economic data, and all types of organizing and sorting. There is also logic functions that help to make decisions from resultant spread sheet data. It would be wise to learn how to use these functions especially where it can cut your time to perform your work data by at least 90%.
