I am not sure it is as simplistic as that. Persons who are left of center to uber left in the US feel passionately about "group" work: social change for the greater good, emotional justifications for spending programs designed to evenly take and unevenly distribute...again for the perceived greater good.

What makes their vision economically unviable is that we are functionally broke as a country. Debt is over 20% of GDP, we are owned by China, our credit is being downgraded, and we're printing more money because of artificially contrived shifts in M1 and M2.

This cannot be sustained. The current administration does not wish to have the US be a super power but rather one of many socially engaged nations who help others.... leading is seen as optional.

While ethically this may seem milder than waging a preemptive war to save our sovereignty; it is a fool's errand in the long term. Various enemies all of whom lack our ethics and values are hunting us. We simply cannot afford this FDR-LBJ style of management any longer.

Some economic systems are not based on supply and demand. Perhaps the liberals that you refer to in the government that you have in mind do understand supply-and-demand but choose to support a different system. Your question implies that you already know that they don't understand supply-and-demand. Are you certain of that assumption? This is the only answer and comment I will offer. I agree with Dr. Bob that your question at least sounds like a loaded one, far afield from the intent of this site.

Doctor Bob
A loaded question.
I won't bite.
Solve your conservative vs liberal issues somewhere else.
If you have an academic question about supply and demand, then ask it.
